Useful macOS network terminal commands – Testing your internet connection from the Terminal

In this video we take a look at a terminal command that will allow us to test the internet connection on our computer. The networkquality command can be very useful if you need to check the quality of your internet connection before you start a stream or video conference.

Quick reference notes:

  • Open the Terminal application found in the Utilities folder within Applications
  • Type the following
networkquality

Note: The networkquality command will measure the speed of your internet connection and not the speed of the network that your computer is connected to. However if you are using WiFi, you may get better results if you use a network cable.

  • After completing your test you can end your Terminal session by typing.
exit
