How to silence nuisance or unknown calls on an Apple iPhone

There is nothing more distracting than receiving a sales, marketing, silent or scammer call while you are trying to work. Not only can it upset your train of thought, for some unsolicited calls can start to become intimidating. So for anyone receiving nuisance or unwanted calls, in this video we demonstrate how you can prevent your iPhone from ringing if a calling number is not in your Contacts or Recent Calls list.

Note: According to a Daily Mail article, in 2021 there were 1.5 billion nuisance calls which is the equivalent to around 9000 calls a minute. Which means that an adult in Britain will receive on average seven unwanted calls or messages a month.

So it’s concerning that in 2021, the Information Commission Office (ICO) received 130,000 complaints, but only issued around £2.8 million in fines.

Quick reference notes:

  • From the Home screen, open Settings
  • Within Settings locate and select Phone
  • In Phone settings choose Silence Unknown Callers
  • Toggle the option Silence Unknown Callers
  • Return the Home Screen

Note: Calls from unknown numbers will be silenced, sent to voicemail and displayed on the Recent list. Incoming calls will continue to ring from people in your contacts, recent outgoing calls and Siri Suggestions.
