How to get your macOS to sort folders and files like Windows 10

logos

Issue:

If you made the jump from Windows to macOS, you may have noticed that by default macOS sorts all files and folders in alphabetic order. This is opposite to Windows which sorts folder then files in alphabetic order.

Resolution:

To change the default way macOS ( 10.12 and above ) sorts files and folders, complete the following:

  • Open a Finder window
  • From the Finder menu bar (at the top of the screen) select Finder > Preferences
  • Now click on the Advanced icon

  • Check the tick box “Keep folders on top when sorting by name
  • Close the Finder Preference pane
