How to factory reset an Apple iPhone (2023)

In this video we demonstrate how you de-authorise and factory reset a 2023 Apple iPhone. Typically you would reset your handset if you intend to decommission, sell or give away your phone. However, you can also reset your handset if you would like a clean start with iOS.

Notes: We recommend that you backup all your data to your Apple iCloud account before you wipe your handset. Also in order to correctly de-authorise an iPhone handset, the device needs to be connected to the internet. Finally make sure you know the Apple Account username and password being used by the handset.

Quick reference notes:

  • Open Settings on your phone
  • Now locate and select General
  • From within General scroll through the options and choose Transfer or Reset iPhone

Notes: While we used an iPhone SE in this video, the user interface is generic to all other models of handsets. So as the user interface as the same on an Apple iPad and the iPad Pro, the same instructions will apply.

  • Three options are presented, select Erase all Content and Settings
  • You will now be informed as to what will be erased from the phone

Note: If you decide that you do not wish to wipe your handset, simply return to the Home Screen by either pressing the Home button or swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Now either double click on the Home button or starting at the bottom of the screen swipe halfway up the screen to display your open applications. Locate the Settings card and swipe it closed.

  • Select Continue
  • When prompted to enter the Passcode for your iPhone
  • The iPhone will now back itself up via iCloud
  • You will not be prompted for your Apple ID password. This is so the iPhone can de-register itself from your iCloud account.
  • When prompted select Erase iPhone to wipe and reset your phone
